Connecting Kids to STEM in the Country

My Students

As a teacher that works in a small, rural town, our school services a high number of EC students. 12 out of my 20 are considered EC. Five students are autistic and we have 5 with severe learning disabilities in reading/language arts. I also have several students labeled ADHD and one with Opposition Defiance Disorder.

Even though my students face many challenges, they want to learn, they are very creative, and they are actively engaged in their learning process.

Many of my students receive special services, are free lunch recipients, and face challenges at home. Despite these challenges, the children love to be actively engaged in their learning. In STEAM, the children love to design and develop projects, such as leprechaun traps, bird feeders, and an actively working worm farm, that helps with fertilizing our school garden area. The children are very curious and love to do research and learn more (dig deeper), but unfortunately, I have limited supplies and funding available.

My Project

Because we live in a very impoverished and rural community, students often lack the knowledge and know how to prepare them for the 21st Century. If I can get some much-needed technology for the students, I can take these children on incredible learning journeys.

I hope to show my second graders that there are choices they can make in their lives that, even though they might come from poverty and a small, sheltered community, they can be and do anything they want with their lives.

STEM is one avenue where all children can learn. They can use their imaginations, build, design, and create anything they set their minds to!
