Connecting Drum Circles to Mindfulness and Self-Regulation in Fourth Grade
My students need five Djembe Drums and a singing bowl to use as a tool for mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation so they can stay regulated during the school day, ultimately resulting in increased academic success.
My fourth grade students are caring, outgoing, and creative students. They come from diverse backgrounds from all around the world. My students love exploring and being real life scientists while building social and academic skills. They are creative problem solvers who work diligently every day at our low socioeconomic school. We are grateful and excited to have this opportunity get our project funded!
The students in my class are innovative learners who are seeking opportunities to be creative 21st century problem solvers by using non-traditional technological tools.
We love being scientists and engineers, but we are lacking the supplies necessary to engage in high levels of exploration. My students come from underprivileged families and would never have these amazing opportunities without your help!
My Project
Students in my classroom enjoy practicing mindfulness strategies, but are seeking opportunities to improve their mindfulness practice. My students began doing research to figure out how they can improve their mediation and mindfulness use. One group of students came across a vast variety of research stating that Drum Circles are an excellent way to initiate meditation, increase focus and mindfulness, and regulate yourself when stressed.
After my students started researching how to increase their ability to use mindfulness to calm them in stressful situations, they developed a plan to obtain a set of Djembe drums and a singing bowl.
With these materials, my students will be able to come in after recess and calm down in order to learn the remainder of the day. The students will practice rhythmic patterns and create relaxing music all by themselves! They will investigate drum circles by continuing to research these, watch informational videos, and practicing synchronized beats. This will help to increase their cognitive and emotional development. My students are so excited to have helped develop this plan and for the opportunity to bring music and mindfulness into our classroom!
