Do you remember how you felt the first time you used a tablet? When was the last time you read a book on one? Put a Kindle Fire into the hands of my students and give them the tools to be technologically proficient and prepared for future careers in math and science.
At our French immersion, International Baccalaureate school, students use inquiry-based learning to become real-world problem solvers.
My inquisitive second grade students are active participants in a lifelong journey of knowledge and through daily rigorous instruction, they explore themes of global significance. Students spend the entire school day in the target language, reading, writing, speaking and interacting in French. While we explore traditional elementary school themes, we do so through a bilingual lens which enhances our global perspective and ideas of citizenship. As an independent, free, public school, students from diverse backgrounds across the city come together for the school day, bringing with them a variety of experiences and prior knowledge. With an increase in available classroom technology, all students would be better positioned to be successful in this information-based, highly technological, 21st century society.
The National Science Foundation says that "in the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy." My students yearn to answer this call for increased technological proficiency but our classroom lacks the funds to put the technology into their hands. While some students in my class' diverse population use tablets, computers and smart phones at home, a divide exists in the classroom between the 'haves' and 'have-nots.' My inquisitive second grade students would relish the opportunity to have the world at their fingertips through the use of a Kindle Fire. Students would be able to enhance their own learning by not only reading ebooks, but also by exploring classroom topics by having technology in a hand-held format. With a Kindle Fire, students can transform into global problem-solvers who design solutions and are prepared for careers in technology.
Technology is pervasive in nearly every aspect of our lives today.
With a Kindle Fire in our classroom, students will be able to produce exemplary outcomes, and identify themselves as capable. A Kindle Fire will open doors to science, technology, engineering and math that were previously closed, and serve as a 21st century tool for success. The technology our students will use as adults has not yet been invented, so we must prepare our students to be technological inquirers and problem solvers!
