At our French immersion, International Baccalaureate school, students use inquiry-based learning to become real-world problem solvers. My inquisitive second grade students are active participants in a lifelong journey of knowledge and through daily rigorous instruction, they explore themes of global significance. Students spend the entire school day in the target language, reading, writing, speaking and interacting in French. While we explore traditional elementary school themes, we do so through a bilingual lens which enhances our global perspective and ideas of citizenship. As an independent, free, public school, students from diverse backgrounds across the city come together for the school day, bringing with them a variety of experiences and prior knowledge. With an increase in available classroom technology, all students would be better positioned to be successful in this information-based, highly technological, 21st century society.
