I teach many English language learners who are anxious to succeed and learn something new each day! We have a dedicated staff of teachers at our school who bring their best to the class and to each and every lesson they teach.
Some of my students come from homes that do not have everyday technology such as home computers or even basic Internet access.
I teach at a Title I school where nearly 50% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. They are working their hardest to try to learn as much as they can and to develop good study skills.
My Project
In an effort to build community and positivity in our classroom, we want to create a VIP Table in our learning environment. Students in our classroom recognize each other for demonstrating the Pillars of Character. This next year students will also have the opportunity to be a VIP for the day when that happens.
Being a VIP in our classroom means that student has been a role model, demonstrated integrity and good character, and, as a result, experiences the privilege of sitting at the VIP table where they will use special supplies for the day.
We need a table and stools, a storage caddy, crayons, light box letters, and Washi tape to create this area.
It is my hope that all my students will have multiple opportunities to sit at the VIP Table over the course of the year. It is a small thing, but sitting with a friend, using the special crayons and caddy of nice markers, having a taped off section just for them, and adding their own touches to our class light up board can be a big motivator for fifth graders! We are always looking for ways as a class to build positive character and recognizing where that positive character that already exists within our room. My students thought this would be one way to help that!
This VIP Table will be used all year by students. Hopefully this will be serve as an incentive to increase positive behavior in our class. The nice set of crayons reserved just for students was a really popular item this past year, but I want them to start the year with a fresh set. It will really help us get the year started on the right foot!
