Confidence is Half the Battle

My students need five mp3 players to listen to stories and the five books that accompany those stories.

At the beginning of the year, I take my ninth-grade students to the library to choose an independent reading book. Most students rush in, taking advantage of the freedom to browse and choose. A few students dig in their heels, standing at the front of the library with their arms crossed. They all say the same thing: "I hate reading." By December, after much cajoling and encouragement, many of these students will have finished a book on their own for the first time in their lives. By the end of the year, some of them have become enthusiastic readers. I want to speed this up! Janet Allen, a respected literacy specialist, has seen books on tape boost the confidence of insecure readers. She writes in her book Yellow Brick Roads, "It was amazing for us to see students develop such language fluency from reading books with audiotapes that they were able to wean themselves from their recording." (109) Listening to books while reading is a stepping stone to greater literacy, but it is a proven and effective way to increase readers' confidence. These mp3 players will not only benefit the readers who use them, it will enrich the entire classroom. By giving all my students access to the age-appropriate and sophisticated stories we read and discuss, I can create a pedagogically diverse but universally rigorous classroom. My school is a big urban school in Brooklyn, and my classes are wonderfully diverse. These mp3 players will help me to take advantage of this diversity - struggling readers can read the same texts as my other students and contribute their street-smart, worldly and wise thoughts to our classroom discussions. These students have the intellects to respond to these texts, and a small technological boost to overcome a habit of non-reading will go a long way in helping creating a rigorous and college-bound culture in which all students participate.
