Computers Lost in Fires Placed Back in Students' Hands
My students need six Chromebooks, cases, headsets and mouse devices. As a result of the wild fires, 115 students lost everything, including computers. RVMS is a Google site, meaning that many of our assignments are completed through Google Classroom.
Our Middle School students have been very resilient this year. Our neighborhood was greatly impacted by the wild fires that devastated more than 5,000 homes. Tragically, 115 of our students lost their homes. Families and teachers struggle to find housing in a limited market. Some students are living in temporary trailers. Others have to leave their rentals in order to accommodate those who lost their homes to the fires. We have discovered the true meaning of community spirit as we make strides toward regaining a sense of normalcy. Our community and school have supported each other with empathy, generosity, and appreciation. We are rebuilding more than homes.
My Project
We are requesting six Chromebooks, cases, headsets and mouse devices. I have a Chromebook cart that can charge six more Chrome books. Our site does not allow students to check out a Chromebook for home use. If my project is funded, students will be able to check out a Chromebook and use it at home.
Every week, I hear multiple students ask for time extensions because they do not have computer access at home.
As education moves toward online assignments, students without computers have a huge disadvantage. My students write essays, narratives, and projects through Google Classroom, which allows me to view their progress and make suggestions for improvement as they write.
The fires burned so much, but not the students' desire to excel and achieve in a technology driven society. They need access to computers, and six Chrome books would give them that necessity.
