We just earned a grant for using Reflex Math, a web-based Math intervention program for fact fluency but we do not have enough technology in the classroom to support the minimum usage of 3 times a week! We really need to increase the number of computers in the classroom in order to create a center to support this learning initiative! My students need 2 new computers.
I have a positive and engaging classroom environment.
Teaching in a 3rd grade two-way immersion classroom allows me to instruct my 32 wonderful and diverse students in both Spanish and English. Working in a Title I school means most students come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Most students are from a Hispanic background.
This group comes to school every morning ready to learn. They have worked hard on standardized testing, and they deserve everything I can do to improve their learning opportunities. Additional technology in the classroom will allow me to more successfully address their individual needs.
My Project
With the addition of laptop computers in the classroom, we will be able to create learning centers that will support bilingual language acquisition in both literacy and math. The initial goal is to meet the grant requirements of the Reflex Math program which requires all students to use the program for 20 minutes 3 times a week. We currently have only one student computer which makes this goal difficult to accomplish. The 2 new laptop computers will be used for creating PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, videos, and anything else that makes the learning fun and meaningful.
The final goal is to have at least 10 laptops in the classroom; however, we would like to begin with 2 for this project.
I am a strong believer in 21st Century Learning which involves teaching students higher level thinking skills through project-based learning, including the use of technology. As students develop computer literacy, by having easy and frequent access to technology in the classroom, they will develop the relevant skills to be successful in the 21st Century workplace. Students with learning differences and those who need higher levels of support will be able to have their learning differentiated to meet their needs, and all students will enjoy a feeling of success as they create technology-based projects that exemplify their learning.
