"Writing is a journey of Discovery..." is the beginning of a quote by Mini Grey which emphasizes the importance of using writing as a means to find the most inner truths about ourselves. In our 5th grade class, we work together as a team to become proficient in life and academic skills
5th Grade dual Immersion is a set of two groups of 25 students that rotate during the day.
Half of the day students learn all subjects in English and half of the day students learn all the subject in Spanish. This helps the English Language Learners to improve their English skills, and our Spanish Language learners become bilingual and prepared for the growing globalized world.
My Project
As part of becoming proficient in all subjects, in both languages, our 5th grade classes will be in charge of creating a school newspaper every month, with opinion articles, interviews, pictures, science and math topics, and literacy activities. All students will apply for a position in the newspaper by writing a resume and having an interview.
Unfortunately, our wonderful school has very limited resources. With the computers we have, being used for testing preparations, it is almost impossible for every student to fully experience the wonders of this real life experience. A big number of these students do not have a computer home.
We need at least 3 computers and a camera so they can research, write, and create their articles.
This project is fully connected to the Core Standards taught in School.
With the materials needed to start this project, the students will have a chance to experience how the real world is, and they will nurture the necessary skills to survive in it. The wonderful part of it, is that this project will help them to prepare for the upcoming math, science, and writing assessments they have to take.
