It's a fact that computer programming jobs are growing at two times the national average. Young adults can come straight out of high school after taking four computer science classes, and get a good job within this growing field. Most students are not aware of how important computer science education is.
I teach at a model school that incorporates performing arts, visual arts, coding, computer science, and STEM (STEAM) within the curriculum.
Our urban school receives federal funding for programs that provide free breakfast and lunch for every student, and title 1 services to economically disadvantaged boys and girls. We are a class which includes military families, gifted students, ESL students, and the tech savvy. My students are energetic and very busy within the classroom. Even with parental support, I would love to say that my students have everything that they need to be successful. But they don't. We are preparing students for college, the workforce, and the world beyond, so they can have a better life.
The Kindle Fires and cases will be used in the classroom to keep all students engaged in learning coding and computer programming. There are a lot of new and innovating apps that students will have access to with the online capability that the Kindle Fire brings into the classroom. The students will also be able to apply what they have learned in other content areas like language arts. By using the notebook accessory and mouse, they will be able to connect use our Surface tablet with other devices in the classroom to model, instruct, and teach others. All of the requested items will help us to become logical thinkers as we practice 21st Century skills. Students will be able to expand on current STEM activities like building roller coasters and bridges along with programming robotics within the curriculum. By connecting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills and knowledge together, student success becomes an essential part of a child's everyday development.
With the addition of the Kindle Fire and Surface accessories being used in the classroom, my students will be able to practice skills that one day they will be able to use in the workforce.
This technology will help prepare them for future careers, as well as help them become lifelong learners.
