Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ours is a Title I, 'at risk' school in the inner city of a large metropolis. Most of our parents are employed in the service industry and work long, exhausting hours to provide basic necessities for their families. They love their children and want to provide them with a good education to improve their future.
My students are curious, loving, funny, enthusiastic, happy, eager to please, full of mischief and they have big dreams for the future.
They're also little boys and girls dealing with the instability of inner city life: violence, drug and alcohol abuse, high crime rates, anxiety, generational poverty, homelessness and hunger. This is their reality. It can be very stressful, traumatic and overwhelming for young children. As you can imagine, they tend to be cautious when meeting new people or entering into new situations.
Yet, they're not jaded. They don't exude an attitude of entitlement. They know that cash is scarce and they've learned to go without. They're very generous with what they do have, often sharing with classmates who have even less. They are grateful for anything and everything they receive. Their thanks are given so freely and humbly -- often followed by a hug!
My Project
Special funding has provided Chromebooks for every 1st grader in our school. Students with prior access to technology are accustomed to using touch screens and mice.
Since our children will be doing all district testing on the Chromebooks and we want to ensure they have every opportunity to do their best, we need computer mice.
These particular mice are smaller than average and cordless, which will make them much easier for my little ones to handle.
We also need chart paper to help create anchor charts to help students recall information they've learned. Anchor charts are visual reminders for students struggling to master 1st grade skills. The chart paper will also allow me to better model the process of writing stories, reports, poetry and journal entries.
These two items will greatly benefit my students and help them make the most of the educational opportunities afforded them.
