Composting What?

My students need 3 compost bins, thermometers, and ph meters to complete a project for their Earth Science Unit.

My Students

Why Composting? I am so excited to share this experience with my students. Students daily throw away almost half of the food they take in the cafeteria. What if we could use this food for a cool science experiment?

My students are an excited bunch of 5th graders.

In science last year I exposed them, as 4th graders, to many experiments and referred to them as "scientists". By the end of the year they were finding me in the hall to tell me about a scientific discovery they made at home. I want to keep that momentum going this year as I loop with the students, but need supplies. Most of my students live in apartments and have little exposure to gardening or earth materials outside what I provide in the classroom. We are an urban population in a suburb - but with unlimited potential if we have the right supplies. Our school science kits are not enough!

My Project

Three and a half pounds of trash a day! That is the typical amount of waste we produce here in the United States - and 25% of that is biodegradable. I want to show my students how to compost as a way to recycle. We will start by reading about composting and what it could look like. I will have my class divided into three groups and challenge them to make the compost the fastest! You will give them the supplies they need: the bins to keep the compost, the thermometer and Ph meter to collect data. This will allow the scientific process to take root - they will have to plan, keep data, respond to questions and give results on their discovery. We cannot complete any part of this project without these donated resources.

I am so excited to have this project funded and tell my students about the project.

I can already hear their excitement, questions and ideas - all they need is you! This project is a hands on way to explore Earth Science. It is concrete and hands on. How many of you knew the joy of digging in the dirt when you were young? I want to give my students an experience that they would not be able to have at home. Please help me.
