Help me give my students varied experiences to help learning stick. Competition and inquiry make learning exciting and fun. The Eggspert system will provide exciting competitions for students. The chart paper and books will provide inquiry experiences.
I have 6th grade Social Studies students from varied backgrounds. A significant number of our students come from military families as we are near an air force base; the remainder of our students come from rural areas around the base. Because of this, students have varied travel and world experiences. To allow all students to have equitable experiences, we often use varied texts, inquiry activities, and virtual internet experiences. A variety of experiences and activities are important to meet the needs of students with such a wide array of world experiences and talents.
My Project
Learning, like invention, is spurred by questioning, wondering, and competition. Everyone is more likely to learn things about which they interested in and have questions about. Competition often provides motivation. History lessons involving inquiry ignite students' sense of "I wonder..." The books that I am requesting have inquiry lessons about many of the topics that I teach and would provide me with a bank of ideas to expand inquiry learning in my classroom.
Competition and inquiry working together create a high energy learning environment that gets students excited about what they are learning which increases knowledge retention.
The Eggspert system I would like to have will create a competition element as it allows students or student groups to compete with each other in a game show or challenge type format.
Inquiry helps students explore ancient cultures and mysteries of the past in a way that makes it more meaningful to them. As they read and write to find answers to problems, students are more engaged with the material they are learning so the learning "sticks." The easel pads will allow students space to brainstorm on the back white board section before making more final representations of the answers to the questions they will be exploring. This will also give them writing experiences beyond the typical paper pencil they usually have. The bonus of this set of chart pads is the white board on the back that can continue to be used after the paper supply is depleted.
