Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I do a student survey at the beginning of the year, many of my students claim to hate reading. In one year, that changes. Because Literature Circles allow for students to read and discuss books of their choosing, there is a better buy-in system. However, we need more books!
My school is located in a a socioeconomically depressed area.
Many of the students struggle with reading, and don't have the resources at home to help them improve. My students know that their education is key to rising up out of stifling poverty, but that path has many challenges. They are great kids, but they know that their station in life right now isn't great. Many of them give up and fall into apathetic routines because the challenges they face are just too great for many of them. However, when the right book is in their hands, the world opens up to them. I don't have many problems with phones or MP3 players in class, but I do have to tell kids to stop reading and focus on the task at hand. They want to learn, they want to improve, and they need our help.
My Project
The right book in the hands of the right student can be life-changing. I have seen students' reading levels improve by 4 or 5 grade levels in one year because of the emphasis on Literature Circles and reading in my classroom. We've survived off of paperback books from thrift stores and generous friends, but those books are starting to fall apart. We can't let this momentum stop. Please help purchase high interest books like Bee Season, Dark Dude and No Country for Old Men to use in my classroom. When a student goes from reading at a 3rd grade level to a 7th grade level in one year, their studies improve across the board. One huge way to continue to combat the achievement gap it is through books, but we need more. More than that, the neighborhood surrounding our school is riddled with gangs and crime, but books offer a way out for students and allow them to enter into spaces they have never entered before.
I can't say it any clearer, improving literacy changes lives.
A child who can read well, will find more success in all of their class. Think of the last great book you ever read and the joy you received from that. That is what I want for every one of my students. You can help make that happen by making more Literature Circle sets available to my students. With your donation, you can change lives.
