Our students are incredibly creative and innovative. They continually raise the bar with their ownership of learning and bravery to try new things. Our elementary school is a special place; as the only district in the state without a racial majority, we celebrate the diversity of our classrooms by affirming our variety of cultures, languages, and learning styles. Though many of our students live in poverty, their resiliency speaks volumes about their capability and agency to change their community!
My students deserve to experience all the world has to offer; they deserve to be heard.
They benefit from being able to create, explore, and collaborate with others. We build community and character through rich experiences and support all learners, even when faced with low funding.
My Project
Our class is learning to be kind and compassionate humans. We are studying our impact on the environment, learning to care for plants and animals and researching the needs of living organisms. This project will help them take care of their class pets: hairless rats affectionately named Mae Jemison and Mary Todd Lincoln after some powerful historical women that we will be studying.
The items in this project include items that will teach the students how to care for the animals, find compassion for other beings, and help them to become animal trainers!
The items requested in this project will provide for the needs of our class pets. The students are gaining responsibility and learning to feed, clean and care for these animals. Items such as food, toys, treats and bedding will ensure our smart little rat friends are well taken care of for a long time. Rats are very intelligent and need a great deal of stimulation. Some items in this project provide stimulation for their wondering little minds. There’s even a rat maze! How cool is that? The hairless rats do require extra warmth so the hanging tents and tank heaters will help in that area. Additionally, the fun portable cage will allow certain students to take them home over the weekends and breaks. Your donation will help keep Mae and Mary happy and healthy and teach an entire class of fifth graders compassion and responsibility!
