My Project

This project seeks to buy concert band sheet music in which the composers were inspired to compose based on a story of compassion for others. Each piece of music has a different story to tell and all of them will require the students to take an introspective look at the situation and its impact on themselves.

By hearing the stories behind each of these musical compositions, my students will become more aware of the struggles of others around them in their daily lives.

This awareness will likely make them more compassionate to others and the struggles that we all face day to day. My goal is that students will perform these pieces with passion and with an understanding of why the pieces were written. Each piece has a different story.

"Broken Pieces" was written in remembrance of a young boy who had cancer and his struggle to battle and ultimately lose to this disease.

"Our Cast Aways" was written to bring awareness to the thousands of shelter pets each year that are abandoned and killed.

"A Solitary Wish" was written through the eyes of a homeless person during the holiday season.

"Of Endless Miles and Empty Rafts" was written to remember and bring awareness to the thousands of migrants who have attempted to escape their home country and some were even killed at sea during the process. "Each Time You Tell Their Story" was composed to honor fallen soldiers on the battlefield and to remember their sacrifices and the ones they left behind.

I will be able to easily measure the success of this project, as I'm sure it will evoke some strong emotions in several of my students. Some will probably have a personal connection to one or more of these pieces of music.
