This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Children growing up in underserved communities like the South Bronx face unique challenges. I see every day the hardships my students endure. That's why, as a P.E. teacher, I'm committed to creating a classroom where kindness, understanding, and compassion are as important as learning physical skills.
Compassion isn't something we usually teach in the gym, but I believe it's the most important lesson of all.
I want my students to walk off the court and into their lives with not only strong bodies but also kind hearts and a deep understanding of how their actions affect others.
This project will fund a library of books centered around themes of sportsmanship, mindfulness, and social-emotional learning (SEL). These stories will help me teach my students invaluable lessons about:
* Understanding Others: Books like "What If Everybody Said That?" will encourage students to consider the impact their words and actions have on their peers, helping them develop an empathetic perspective.
* Alleviating Suffering: Books focused on mindfulness will give students tools to manage their emotions, helping them better support friends in distress and create a more supportive classroom atmosphere.
* Practicing Compassion: With activity books and resources, I can create targeted lessons and games that turn the concepts of kindness and sportsmanship into everyday habits.
Success for this project won't just be measured in grades. I'll witness it in the way students treat each other on the playground, how they handle winning and losing, and how they respond to a classmate having a difficult day.
With your support, we can help students students champion each other and learn that true strength comes from kindness. Your donation, matched by the generous Compassion Project, will help lay a foundation of empathy in young hearts and minds.
