Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students blow me away every year. Their eagerness to learn about the world around them is impressive and I want to cultivate that with a brand new project. Through the use of my picture book I Am Loved, students will be introduced to the meaning of compassion and examples of what it means. They then chart various examples of how to show compassion for others at school, at home, and in the community. This chart will be our concept board of which pictures to capture for our bulletin board. As the unit progresses, the students will also explore the benefits of showing compassion towards others. I intend to use the Instax Mini cameras to offer students the chance to explore a modern form of art, photography. Students will capture both unstaged and staged photos of their peers and teachers that demonstrate compassion. These photos will create our Compassion Bulletin Board. Through the use of these pictures, students will be able to define what compassion looks like in our school community.

The goal of this compassion project is to help students engage in the act of showing compassion by using photography to create content that promotes compassion among themselves and others.

Ultimately, students will embrace these ideas and grow up to be compassionate adults. The world is an unfair place at times but through acts of compassion we all build a better future.

My hope is that my current and future students will develop a joy for showing compassion, while building essential skills such as collaboration, communication, and self-awareness that will prepare them for success in both their personal and professional lives. The success of this project will be measured through a pre and post survey regarding what compassion means, looks like and how it translates to better mental health.
