Help me give my students proper paint for a community service project. This spray paint will be used to beautify our school grounds and to teach our students that their good deeds can affect the entire school community.

My Project

Our school community is closely - knit. We celebrate one another and stick together. This year we have a new addition to our school grounds - a spirit rock. This rock can be rented as a PTA fundraiser and then painted to celebrate members of our school community.

We want to broaden the reach of who can access and use the spirit rock by providing spray paint to our school community.

By removing the barrier of the cost of spray paint to beautify the spirit rock, we are increasing the variety of people in our school community who might rent it and use it, and enjoy the benefits of the community art. This act of community service will teach our students how eliminating barriers to accessing opportunities benefits not only a marginalized group (in this case, people who can’t afford paint to paint our spirit rock) but also the entire community. Our entire community is going to enjoy the increased variety in school grounds beautification as a result of more, different people in our community having a turn painting the spirit rock. All students in the school community walk by the rock every day, as well as the majority of families who drop their students off in the car rider line. The messages we convey and beauty we share through our painted spirit rock has great impact.

Our 4th grade students are going to lead this project by making the initial suggestions as to how the rock could be decorated using our community paint. We will use each 4th grade classes' library time to collect and analyze their suggestions and determine which paint project to complete.

Once we have a design chosen, we will approach our art teacher, Mr. Wellman, to help us paint the rock.
