Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students of Aptos Middle School represent the vibrant city of San Francisco. We are a large comprehensive Title I middle school. My students speak Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, Samoan, Korean, Japanese, Danish, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Urdu and Arabic. 58% of students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 15% are English learners. These students are eager to learn about the world around them. My students have amazing ideas and a remarkable capacity for exploring and explaining their world.
Students deserve a chance to make a lasting impact in their communities--their voices and ideas are an integral part of what shapes the school environment.
My students astound me with their ingenuity every day. I am so excited to see how our mural projects unfolds with the influence of their creativity and community pride.
My Project
All too often, the repetitive desk-and-paper school environment limits the opportunities students have to freely express themselves and learn through tactile experiences that can develop and cultivate their skill and sense of accomplishment. Robert Brooks suggests that we should help children develop "islands of competence" by asking, "what are the strengths and interests that this child possesses, strengths that can be nurtured to bring this child a realistic sense of accomplishment and dignity?"
Painting a collaborative mural will give students the chance to develop artistic and large-scale project skills while also establishing a lasting connection to their learning environment and educational community.
By donating to this project, you will provide our school with high-quality art resources--this Chroma Acrylic Mural Paint is water-resistant, moisture-resistant making it ideal for outdoor art. We want to make sure that our hard work will be appreciated by future generations of Aptos students. We will first have a collaborative planning process where students will submit their ideas, then synthesize our vision into one mural, and divide the mural into sections for students to work on. The supplies on this grant include brushes, painter's tape, an acrylic gesso base, and a varnish spray to seal the mural once complete. I have written in a large quantity of supplies so that we can make this a large-scale project that involves as many students as possible.
