Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all newcomers and have just begun their second year of American education in East Oakland. They have come from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Mexico, many are refugees fleeing government corruption. All are here seeking a better life. Even though they are in a low income/high poverty, high crime area of the US, they are still so hopeful, and I believe in everything they are capable of. They have such a desire to better themselves and learn the English language so they can be successful. They are so resilient and inspiring, and I strive to make a classroom that they feel comfortable in and can able to grow in. They are curious and I want to offer them as many tools as I can to succeed.
My Project
I am requesting a green screen, 2 microphones with a headphone splitter, an iPad for students to record and edit with iMovie, as well as books for me for Professional Development on technology in the classroom and blended learning. I am a leader on the newcomer pathway development team at my school, which is responsible for helping integrate our program curriculum with the pathways on our campus, mainly our community health pathway.
I am designing curriculum for a community health blended learning project, and want students to record news stories about community health in our community.
These tools will allow students to have hands on experience in using technology, as well as a chance to learn more about issues in the health of our community.
