Community Drumming Initiative

In our world today, I see a need to cultivate a sense of a global community in our students. The Community Drumming Initiative will bridge the gap between Seneca, SC and some of the leading musical countries in Africa. This project will include purchasing authentic African percussion instruments such as drums, shakers, and bells for student use. The funding would also be used to purchase instructional materials on drumming, and to host an African Drumming and Dancing group from a major South Carolina University. This group will perform for the students and share with the students firsthand stories and dances from Africa. Sessions will be held as needed for parents to join in our drumming circle so that not only is the initiative fostering student awareness, but it is also fostering community awareness of other cultures. This drumming initiative correlates with the South Carolina Standards for Performing Arts (Music) in that the standards say that students should be able to �Listen to and identify, by genre or style, examples of music from various historical periods and world cultures; describe how elements of music are used in music examples from various cultures of the world; and identify and describe roles of musicians in various settings and world cultures." Each of these standards will be addressed through this Community Drumming Initiative. We really need your help to take our students on an adventure to a place far away in Africa this year.
