I have had the good fortune of teaching Special Education for over 25 years. I started my career with transition students ages 18-22 years old and have worked with many other age groups throughout my career. I am happy to say that I am back teaching transition! I have 9 students with Moderate/ Severe Disabilities with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities. Students have received a Certificate of Completion from the school district in lieu of a diploma.
My students love coming to school to see what their next real life adventure will be.
Being a Transition teacher is very unique. I am not confined to the walls of the classroom. I tell my students the community is our classroom. Traditional classroom teaching methods have not been successful for my students, Academics and seat work have always been a struggle. My job is show them that learning can happen anywhere!

My Project
As a community based educator, I am extremely fortunate to have the community as my part-time classroom. I am able to teach lessons about street safety, survival signs, money management, appropriate social interactions, hygiene, health and nutrition I am able to determine if my students are able to generalize their new skills across environments.
The life skills games and and math curriculum listed will enhance the current curriculum and give students another opportunity to practice and generalize their skills.
My students learn best through differentiated tasks, lessons taught using multiple modalities, meaningful repetition, hands on learning, role playing and an emphasis on why it important to learn the specific skills. They understand that everything they are learning is increasing their level of independence.
