My students need a KitchenAid Stand Mixer to make bread for our community service projects. The multi-section bread pans will allow students to make multiple loaves of bread at one time.
Our school is located in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont where the local food movement is gaining recognition from people around the country. With our rich history in agriculture and the environmentally-sustainable model that is emerging from our community, it is our hope as educators to bring the next generation closer to their community. It is here, where farmers, businesses, local historians, and the children of the community come together in partnership to preserve the community’s traditions and build a deeper understanding of the web of connections within their community.
My fourth-graders began a service learning project this winter by partnering with the local food pantry by collecting and donating food items during the month of December.
Knowing that the need in our community remains, the children expanded their project to include a monthly bread baking project. Motivated by the United Nations Sustainability Global Goals, these civic-minded students are tackling the goal to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture in their own community.
My Project
Our fourth-graders have been busy baking bread for the food pantry in our community throughout the winter months. We are in need of bread pans for making multiple loaves at one time. The baguette french bread pan and three strap bread pans will do the trick! As we build up our repertoire of recipes, we could sure use a KitchenAid Stand Mixer for working with wet dough. With these new additions to our kitchen classroom, we'll be more productive!
The fourth-graders will be challenging our school community to support the local food pantry during the spring by having a Community Bread Challenge.
Teachers, students, parents and community members will be asked to make and donate bread to the food pantry. The students made a video on how to make no-knead bread that is posted on the school website and planned a community gathering with the entire school to roll out the project. And, of course, we continue to make lots of bread!
With support from our community partners, The Center for an Agricultural Economy, The Galaxy Bookshop, and Buffalo Mountain Coop, we'll take our service learning projects to new heights!
