Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in an urban district where they are struggling with losses from the COVID-19 pandemic and gun violence in almost every part of the city. During a year-long Pandemic, they have stayed indoors, because of a lack of safe places in their neighborhoods. Our school is unique in the district because for the first time all the ninth graders come together for a year before they move to high school with different learning communities.

Although the students travel to school through unsafe neighborhoods, they are eager to come to school to learn.

My Project

My style of teaching is to ask a question or pose a situation to start my students thinking. I also try to move around the media center looking at the student's work and in their faces. I can tell whether a student is deep in thought, excited to share something, or lost. At times one student's question could be answered by another student and it is difficult getting back in front to share something with them (I tend to trip over book bags). Or other times a student in the back has a fantastic suggestion on a topic sitting in the back of the room and the other students in the room can't hear their classmates.

Meeting Owl Pro would help students engaged with each other and resources to use their high order thinking skills to help solve problems while collaborating with their peers.

In addition, it would much easier to have my students present their projects to the class and have an easier time to explain all the details. Students also could give positive feedback to their peers.
