My Project

I teach in a special education classroom where the majority of my students are nonverbal. We rely heavily on picture cues, visuals, pictures, and picture-to-word matching. We often laminate our materials to make them sturdy and last. Very soon, we will lose the ability to send materials to our local AEA for media services. We must have the ability to laminate materials.

My students' goals are centered around communication and visual scheduling.

They must have access to picture cue cards and visuals. Often, we have to print and make a visual cue card on the spot; without lamination, these pictures become damaged and unusable very quickly. My goal is to make appropriate, sustainable materials for my students that can be used throughout their high school experience.

The students in my classroom work hard to meet the demands of school despite their deficits in communication. They deserve the chance to advocate for themselves, talk socially with peers, and demonstrate their personalities by being able to communicate through pictures, words, and visual cues.
