Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students with multiple disabilities are funny, sweet, and curious. We have lots of personalities in my room, and each student has an individualized education plan to provide supports throughout their school day. Every student brings an enormous amount of joy to the group, as well as the challenge to create a learning environment that is perfect for them. Some students need special seating to be able to interact in small groups, some students need assistive technology to communicate and interact within the classroom, and others need hand over hand instruction to help them use classroom tools. All students are learning how to communicate what they need and what they know.
Learning how to communicate is a right and not a privilege.
Most of my students enter my classroom without a strong communication system, since many are non-verbal. Building developmental readiness skills is essential for these students. Before my kids can participate in picture symbol exchanges they must first connect objects to pictures so that the pictures have meaning. They need to build object vocabulary so that they can share their wants and needs. Every person deserves a chance to interact with their environment!
My Project
These products will give my students the opportunity to experience our unit vocabulary in a hands-on method appropriate for their developmental level. The items in my cart will allow students who would otherwise just sit through a read aloud, a chance to explore while they're listening. Each object directly relates to an upcoming unit this year on the Unique Learning Systems curriculum, which is specifically designed for students with special needs. An examples would be "Down on the Farm (Life Science) Some animals live on a farm. What animals can we see? We can see big animals and baby animals!" Each object will be paired with a picture symbol from the unit so that students can build their communication skills.
Students with special needs deserve to have the materials that meet their developmental level and build their readiness skills.
Understanding that pictures and symbols represent objects is essential to building my non-verbal students communication abilities. My kiddos with multiple disabilities are unique and they bring so much positivity to my room and our school, despite the challenges they face. I'm posting this project so that I can better meet their needs and build a classroom that truly individualizes the learning experience.
