This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 6th grade ELL students. I have about 12 students that speak only Spanish, there are 3 students that list Filipino as their primary language, and we have one student who only speaks Polish. All 97 of my students are bilingual and I am always trying to find better ways to ensure they feel welcome and comfortable in my classroom. I want to note that last year we had a family that only spoke French.

The population of the community where I teach is changing, and I want to make sure that I am always prepared to give every child a quality education.

My students are the most hardworking, fun, yet diverse group of students and I would love to be able to communicate with them in their own language. I can not learn several languages overnight and having a translator device would show them how much I appreciate their culture and individuality.

My Project

Middle school students already walk into a classroom uncomfortable with themselves and their environment. I am attempting to close the communication gap that may be present because they are new to this country and as an educator, I can not learn every language that I may encounter.

I can imagine how these students will feel when they know they can speak comfortably in their native language and I can reply.

I use a translator program to change texts and all of my assignments are on Google Classroom, however, we do not have a teacher that can speak every language at our school. This would allow me to speak to any student.
