Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach a class of pre kindergarten aged students with special needs in an elementary school. My students disabilities include autism, mental retardation (Down Syndrome and Fragile X), ADHD and emotional disturbances. All of my students struggle with speech and each receives therapy. Even with this, several of my students are non-verbal and struggle with the most basic communication. Please consider funding a PECS system for our classroom. PECS stands for Picture Exchange Communication System. PECS was originally developed for students with autism and is now used with individuals with a wide variety of communicative disorders. The most unique aspect of PECS is that it teaches children to initiate communication. This past year (I will have the same students this next year) we used a "homemade" version of PECS that was effective but extremely limited. Your generous donation will help purchase the PECS pictures, communication books, and more. My children and I appreciate your donation.
