Communicating Mathematical Ideas Through Manipulatives
My students need 3D shapes with nets and Fraction/Decimal tiles that appeal to several of their senses that can be touched, rearranged, moved about, as a way to make mathematical learning more meaningful.
Our students attend the very first charter school in Randolph County. We serve students in at least 7 counties. Our school has grown at a rapid pace since opening in 2013 due to our school's hands-on focus, which is great for our learners. Our students are from very diverse backgrounds and all have their own unique needs.
Our students love hands-on engaging lessons that promote their academic understandings.
They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically.
My Project
The math manipulatives I'm requesting for my students will allow them to "do" math to understand math. The use of manipulatives in math is almost a daily ritual in my classroom.
The 3D geometric figures with nets will provide a way for my 6th graders to learn surface area (which is a new concept to them) in a concrete manner.
The active involvement using the fraction/decimal tiles allow students to construct their own knowledge and mathematical understandings.
Middle-school students are in transition between Piaget's
concrete operational and formal operational stages of
cognitive development. Many middle school students cannot
completely understand concepts when presented to them in an
abstract way only.
By donating to our project, you will be encouraging our students to solve math using different methods and fostering math at a deeper level by "doing" math.
