The math manipulatives I'm requesting for my students will allow them to "do" math to understand math. The use of manipulatives in math is almost a daily ritual in my classroom. The 3D geometric figures with nets will provide a way for my 6th graders to learn surface area (which is a new concept to them) in a concrete manner. The active involvement using the fraction/decimal tiles allow students to construct their own knowledge and mathematical understandings. Middle-school students are in transition between Piaget's concrete operational and formal operational stages of cognitive development. Many middle school students cannot completely understand concepts when presented to them in an abstract way only. By donating to our project, you will be encouraging our students to solve math using different methods and fostering math at a deeper level by "doing" math.
