My Students
The students in this class are oh so very special. This is a preschool special education environment with a diverse group of learners ranging from 3-5 years old. We have a morning and afternoon session each with 6 students. Our students all have needs requiring an IEP (individualized education program). All of our students have communication needs varying from phonological delays to being non-verbal. Many of our students are diagnosed with autism. Many of our students use pictures, gestures and signs to communicate.
Our students are truly amazing.
They are all so unique, vibrant and special. We have so much fun in preschool. Our students don't even realize they are learning so much because we learn through play with individualized activities based on need.
My Project
This is my 3rd DonorsChoose project and I'm reaching even higher this time. As you may know by now I teach preschoolers with autism. My students have a wide range of skills and sometimes they start their preschool career with little ability to communicate. One of our main goals is to promote communication. All of our students use a variety of tools to communicate including picture cards, signs, and even words. The best feeling for the child, his family and his teachers is to witness the communication growth. Functional communication decreases frustration and promotes the ability to learn and share.
The iPads that I am requesting will help take these most special students communication skills to the next level.
The app that I plan on purchasing to put on the IPads will give the students access to even more vocabulary to help express their wants and needs. This use of technology will add another tool in their toolbox of learning.
For years I've seen first hand how crucial communication is to the well being of the whole child and I just feel so blessed once again to have the opportunity with donors choose to help make the preschool experience even better!
