My Students

I teach multiple grades in a special education classroom. There are 12 students with disabilities in 4th and 5th grade at a Title 1 school.

The students I teach have a wide range of disabilities such as Autism, significant cognitive, behavioral and communication disabilities.

These students are learning important life skills to help them learn how to be social and how to become independent. These students require assistance and constant supervision to maintain their safety throughout the school day while learning these skills.

My Project

There are four adults working in my classroom: one teacher and three teacher assistants. Sometimes the teacher and teacher aides are in different locations in the school such as recess, lunch, and assisting students with toiling needs.

We have a lot of different roles in our classroom that take us out of the classroom.

Sometimes students will run away and teachers will separate to find the student. When the teachers are separated and need communicate with each other they need to use a walkie talkie. Right now we only have three walkie talkies, leaving one teacher with out communication with the other teachers during these crisis situations.
