Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a low income/high poverty middle school in the heart of San Francisco. The majority of our student body is Latino who arrive bright and early every morning.

As an English teacher, I hear so many of their stories.

Homelessness, deportation, even murder have been in the narrative of their lives and yet they still manage to get up every morning and come to school. I admire them, they are my heroes and I always try to do my best for them because they deserve nothing less than that.

My Project

Okay, so this is the dream -- there are nine full months in the school year and what I’d like to do is have a class set of books for every student to take home for each month. This way there will always be a book at a student’s home for them to read. They can carry them around, and take them anywhere. They don't require batteries and unlike our class textbook, they don't weigh 30 pounds. As an educator, I have seen the power in communal reading. Various opinions develop and are voiced, which lead to lively class discussion and unmeasurable critical thinking skills. My weekly homework assignments will encourage organic book discussions that will, hopefully, have less to do with school, and more to do with the joy of reading. These books have been hand-picked by my current students and cross the gamut in genre. Thank you for even considering a donation. This is part 4 of nine.
