This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work with an amazing group of children!
My students are a super culturally diverse group of artistic and technology-driven children in California who just want to have fun while learning things that are relevant to their lives.
Many of them come from challenging backgrounds and homes, with not enough money for basic supplies, let alone computers and tablets. They truly appreciate the safe, learning environment our school provides, and they want to thrive as much as we want them to. They want to learn and they want to be challenged in a positive light. Since we don't have enough funding for Apple technology at our school, when I say the word "iPad," their faces light up, as they realize they are about to be given a special opportunity to use technology in a way that links their learning to something they are passionate about. They are working hard this year, continuing their new path on the Common Core Math Standards and STEM, and would love to have the chance to visually learn, create, and represent the mathematics we are learning in class by hand and digitally. The technology along with the basic art supplies will go a long way.
My Project
In a statement, we just need basic supplies to make it through the year. I don't want this year to be simply lecture and note taking because we don't have the supplies to do the engaging activities.
The most fun project of the year is the lifeline project where you get to represent your life on a number line with graph paper and art pieces to represent what is important to you!
We display them at Open House and it gets kids really talking to their families to get to know more about their family and their lives. It also allows the students and teachers to get to know one another on a personal level, thereby building community. There are some super fun and engaging projects and activities I'd like my students to be able to do this year, but you've got to have supplies to do this. Color paper, rulers, easel pads, glue, graph paper, and markers are essential supplies needed to for some of the projects I have planned. These items will make the projects this year less stressful for families who do not have the means to buy them. They will go toward creating a classroom that can help supply them itself. The other major project is the creation of a blueprint of a home. Students will look at floor plans online and also their home and measure our classroom. They will then scale down these real life rooms, houses, apartments, and make a miniature model or blueprint with colorful paper, cardstock, glue sticks, and more.
