Mrs. Lane from Ukiah CA is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Common Core Literacy Collection

My students need books with dragon slayers, hobbits, robots, snake charmers, the Queen of the Nile, mysteries to solve, and maybe a little romance, too!

My Students

Help us travel to the center of the earth! My students haven't yet discovered that reading can transport them to another dimension, and middle school is the age by which to do it.

My middle schoolers like to ask questions and challenge ideas.

They are learning independence and how to take charge of their education, the latter of which is a daunting challenge for many of them. We live in a small, rural community that offers a few sports activities and little in the way of the Arts.

My Project

Having a selection of books which are meaningful to children is one avenue of experience for young people who have little power in their lives. Having books to which students can relate, and possibly vicariously live through, allows them to experience what others have experienced in reality. With enough quality books, my students will be able to read, reflect on what they have read, create projects illustrating their hard work and knowledge, and advertise books they have enjoyed to their peers. My middleschoolers will learn that they have the power to select a book of their choice. They'll learn that reading is accessible to them and it is free. They'll learn what a library is for and what if feels like to be empowered by reading.

My project is important because my students need a space in which to learn independence and their educational responsibility.

I sincerely want to teach them about the power of books and that reading is empowering and motivating.
