Common Cents: Teaching Kindergartners That Money Doesn't Grow on Trees
My students need to be introduced to the idea that money doesn't grow on trees! I am requesting finance related children's books and materials to create a play store, where students can role play handling money.
Students in my kindergarten classroom come to school excited about learning. Many of my students come from low income families, and all the students at my school receive free lunch. This background can mean that students’ families can not afford to purchase needed school supplies.
My students deserve to receive the best education possible, so they are able to succeed in school and in life.
These boys and girls have such awesome attitudes, and they try their best every day!
My Project
My kindergarten students love to play! They also need to learn about the importance of being financially responsible. By interacting with each other in a play market, my students will learn many financial lessons. They will practice counting, handling money and making good choices. I will incorporate lessons on earning money, saving money, needs and wants and helping others with our money (donors choose donors will be a great example) into this project.
I am requesting a play market, a play cash register and pretend food, in addition to financial literacy related read aloud books.
These items will allow me to create a play market and present a series of lessons addressing financial responsibility. Students will be highly engaged and will be able to draw upon real life experiences that they have had, with their families, during this project. Since nearly all of my students come from low income families, it is extremely important for them to begin to learn about financial responsibility, so that they can begin a path toward becoming financially literate adults.
