This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach at a Title 1 school in Northern Utah. Our diverse school community is highly impacted by poverty with a large ELL population. In addition, our community was hit especially hard during the Covid 19 epidemic. My 3rd graders were the Covid Kindergartners. For many of my students, this is their first experience with a normal school year. They have a lot of catching up to do both academically and socially. Despite this, my students come to school eager to learn. They are delighful children who deserve every chance in life.

I believe that learning to collaborate and communicate is an important life skill.

I have organized my classroom with table groups and shared supplies in order to promote a community feel. However, one of the things that impacts learning in my classroom is the time wasted in transitions as they retrieve their materials in the shared cubbies that they use. Having these organizational materials in my classrooms will help my students to quickly retrieve items and make the classroom run more smoothly. With a more efficiently organized classroom, we will have room for a dream project of mine--a puppet theatre! This will give my students even more opportunities to learn to communicate, collaborate, and practice their language skills in a fun and creative way.
