I work in the small town of South Milwaukee, WI. My effervescent students rise above the challenges of living in a community that has seen significant layoffs and problems with addiction. Our middle school serves a population in which approximately half of the students are considered economically disadvantaged. The students are energetic, appreciative, caring, and curious.
South Milwaukee is a Wisconsin community nestled just to the south of Milwaukee, along beautiful Lake Michigan.
To meet the needs of my students, I make sure that they have access to a variety of non-academic supplies. In my classroom, I stock snacks for students experiencing hunger. I stock feminine hygiene products so that our female students always have access. Having these basic needs and more ensure that we can spend more time focusing on academics in the classroom.
My Project
Our school is currently going through an uptick in the number of COVID cases. Because of this, our students are required to wear a mask at all times (except lunch). Kids are kids, and a paper mask doesn't always make it through the day. By having extra masks on hand, I will be able to ensure that each student is masking appropriately.
Not only are we still dealing with the pandemic, it is also cold and flu season.
Having additional facial tissues on hand is critical to a healthy classroom. In previous years, we have asked for parent/guardian donations of tissue. This year, money is still tight, and families aren't able to help the way that they had been able to in the past.
Lastly, I am looking for help getting additional hand sanitizer. We encourage the students to sanitize as they enter and exit each classroom, and each time they cover a cough or sneeze, or blow their noses. Clean hands help keep us all healthy!
