Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an amazing group of curiosity-seeking, hard-working, school-loving students. They thrive despite the challenges they face daily like growing up in an area of low economic development or learning English as their second language. Many of my students have already been identified as Gifted and Talented and they are like sponges soaking up everything they can.
Like many schools, we face budget cuts and resources for after-school clubs are scarce.
We have students who love reading and want that extra enrichment. Students today are really interested in reading graphic novels and I want to give my students an opportunity to do a book club where we can discuss characters and how those books are made.
My Project
My students need over 30 various titles of graphic novels including Giants Beware, Roller Girl and A Wrinkle in Time for an after school book club. I am requesting books that are written in the style of comic books, they are called graphic novels. My goal is to start an after school club where students can check out these books, read them and have discussions about the characters and events. I would also like to invite graphic artists in to speak with the kiddos about how they do their work and give students an opportunity to write their own stories.
Often we have students who are reluctant to read for fun-this club will be a way to help those students continue developing a passion for reading!
Students have a love for graphic novels and I foresee discussions and activities where they can share that passion with others. Many teachers and parents discount the value of reading these kinds of books-but if it can spark an interest in reading for just one student who previously didn't like to read, it will all be worth it!
