Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are empathetic, driven, and critical in analyzing the world around them. Developmentally, students are ready to start asking tough questions that even adults struggle with; seeking out answers be it through teachers, classroom materials, or their own research.
The best part about 10 and 11 year olds is that students are proud to share their strong opinions and quick to stand up for a friend or community in need.
Whether it's detecting bias in a text, or proposing their own solutions around injustice, students are critical about their surroundings.
My Project
My students LOVE graphic novels. They are constantly looking for more copies of Fly Guy, Dog Man, or even Diary of a Wimpy Kid in our classroom library. However, many of these texts are inaccessible to my students; the reading level of these books is much higher than the' independent levels in our classroom, making it challenging for kids to read these must-have books.
TOON Books are printed with this type of access in mind.
With these new books, students will be able to access comics and graphic novels on their own independent reading level, which will in turn further develop their personal reading habits and help them to grow and flourish as readers.
