Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second-grade classroom is home to 24 energetic and curious children! They come from a variety of economic and cultural backgrounds. Over 50% of our school receives free lunch. A few have learning disabilities, many speak a different language at home, and a few struggle with emotional trauma.

I teach to make a difference in this world!

My students know our classroom is a safe and fun learning environment. Together, we create a community of kind, empathetic friends, and confident, engaged students! Every day in our classroom is another chance to learn, grow, persevere, and do something great!

My Project

My students gather together on the floor to learn. In the morning, they sit up front to practice math skills and concepts. In the afternoon, they gaze in wonder at the large map of the world to locate the 7 continents, 4 oceans, 5 highest mountain ranges, and 4 longest rivers on the planet. Their favorite thing to do is locate the different countries around the world that their ancestors came from. When my students are ready for independent practice, they each have a favorite place to work, some next to a classmate and others in a private learning space.

My second graders learn best with learning tools they can manipulate in a comfortable learning space.

The soft, colorful sunburst area rugs will give my students a comfortable space for whole group practice: math, reading, brainstorming ideas for a writing activity, or sitting and listening to a fluent reader. The colorful velcro circles will define each student's personal space for learning. Some students work best with learning tools they can manipulate. My emergent readers will have fun spelling new words and creating sentences with the magnetic letters on personal magnetic whiteboards. These essential supplies will help my students succeed academically in a more comfortable learning environment.
