Help me give my students reading and relaxing pillows for our Peaceful Place. Students will us the pillows to relax and read mindfulness books, take a nap, do mindful breathing, squeeze stress balls, & color mindful coloring pages.
I teach art and I am the Mindfulness Coordinator. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and socio-economic levels, and they all work together to make our school a positive community of learners. Many of them have serious trauma that hinders their ability to learn. They are working towards gaining more emotional control, self-compassion, and gratitude, which will help them to keep increasing their academics gains.
We have English language learners, new immigrants from the Middle East, and emotionally disturbed students, who all play, meditate and learn together.
Our school is focused on teaching the whole child and building a strong, connected community, which is why we have a Mindfulness Initiative. Our students are learning about themselves, their minds and emotions through the teaching of the Mindful Schools Curriculum.
Maybe your day started out with your mom yelling, or you forgot your homework. Perhaps, your friend hurt your feelings, and then you were struggling to learn the new math lesson. If you are a student having a hard day and need to take a break, you can come to the Peaceful Place. This is an environment that is calm, peaceful and comforting. The comfy pillows are the first step to helping you take actions to regulate your emotions. While resting on the comfy pillows, you can calm down and reset, listen to calming music, take a nap, do some mindful breathing, color in a mindful coloring book or read a mindfulness book. You have just regulated your emotional response. Numerous studies show that when students can regulate their emotions, they are more successful learners. The comfy pillows are the starting point to help calm your sea of emotions.
