This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a new reading teacher this year, I came into a new building and a new room. The excitement of working with children K-5 to improve their reading skills and develop a love of reading has inspired me to create an inviting space. The transformation from book room to a more comfortable and inviting academic space remains a work in progress.

Young readers deserve a space that is warm and inviting.

Reading on the beach, on the couch, or in bed are all comfy and cozy places to enjoy a book. School is a safe place for many of our children, and the surroundings impact students' emotional well-being. I strive to make my reading space a place that puts students in the right mindset and makes them want to come see me every day. Our room also has no natural lighting, and the fluorescent light can be too bright and cause headaches. My goal is to creatively add softer lighting by adding Christmas lights to the rattan wall decor and a floor lamp. By adding lighting in more imaginative ways, the room will be more inviting and reduce the amount of fluorescent lighting within the room. The mesh file holders will allow student folders and books to be stored after each reading session. These additions will allow me to create a more organized space that feels just a little more like home. Who doesn't like a comfy and cozy place to spend most of the day?
