My Students

This is only my second year teaching, and my first full year! I teach second grade in a school that is over sixty-five percent Title I. Over half of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes. We have a diverse group of students, including African American, Asian, and Hispanic students. My students have a variety of needs and deserve what they need to be successful.

My Project

My students are expected to be engaged daily in classroom lessons that are rigorous. That doesn't leave much time for students to move around during the day. My classroom needs to be a place where my students' needs come first. For many of my students, this means sitting in non-traditional places in the classroom, where they can move while they work. Many of my students find it hard to focus in the traditional chairs. They love the option of flexible seating to help them keep their focus all day long, especially those with ADHD. Many of my students like laying on the floor, rocking while they work, or sitting in a "teacher chair." Having low seating will allow the children yet another option to sit and choose where they can be successful.

By giving my students choices about where to sit, they become empowered and realize their choices can directly affect their learning.

The comfy floor cushions will give yet another choice in where to sit while working. This will also help to create a more open space within the classroom, making it feel and look like an inviting and safe place to learn.
