Comfy Couch Over Plastic Chairs What Would You Choose?
My students need flexible seating options to create a sense of community in our learning environment. The Cozy Work Space will include a chair and coach to decrease distractions and increase motivation!
I work with struggling students k-3. My goal is to close the achievement gap and ensure that they can be successful and ready for our rigorous classroom instruction. Most students I work with come from high poverty families. As a result of limited funds, my students not only struggle with learning how to read, but they don’t have the background/life experiences to use while reading or problem solving within text. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. They need a comfortable and inviting environment to learn in!
My Project
For hundreds of years, teaching professionals have been attempting to find the most effective strategies to help struggling readers reach the same achievement as their peers. How can I make the most out of the 30 minute daily lessons I have with my students?
Flexible seating in the classroom has 6 major benefits: choice, community, collaboration, movement, comfort, and sensory input.
Students learn best with some control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to move and be comfortable in their space and they will build a sense of community while they learn to share, take turns, and work together. Many flexible seating options stimulate students' sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADD, ADHD, and ASD.
