Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching art in a diverse, and predominantly low income community has opened my eyes, expanded my mind, and strengthened my heart.
My students are amazing.
They are strong and resilient. Passionate and quick to defend what they believe in. They are sometimes loud because now I see they are desperate to be heard.
I strive to ensure they always have a plethora of opportunities to explore, create, and ultimately be heard through the ARTS. I also know if they are with me, enhancing their artistic skills, they are not on the street potentially engaging in dangerous behavior(s).
My Project
Currently, my classroom has mostly broken tables and chairs. When I accepted this position five years ago, I first had to focus on securing necessary art supplies and making sure students were achieving State and National arts standards.
These four chairs would replace the most unsafe chairs in order of priority and provide a new fun flexible seating option when the students return to in-person instruction.
My students are now garnering local, county, state, regional, and national recognition for their artwork. Therefore, I must focus on the physical state of the space. How can I ask students to give their best, when they are getting sustaining injuries from furniture? I hope to replace as much furniture as possible to make the room a safe haven for peaceful art-making.
