Comfy Chairs for Young Readers
My students need 6 soft seats, 2 beanbag chairs, and a reading pillow to create a comfy place to practice their new reading skills.
Do you remember your kinder class? It probably had a kitchen, blocks, and paint easels, right? Well, because of the new standards and the rigorous curriculum that face our new kinder kids, there is no time for "playtime." I want to make the class library a comfy and colorful place to read and imagine.
My school is located in California about 5 minutes from the Mexican border.
It has a multicultural student population with the majority Mexican. The students come from diverse economic backgrounds, ranging from middle class to low socioeconomic households. Most of the students at my school come from two-parent working homes. The majority of the students attend a 6 to 6 program where they can do their homework and have supervision. The students come into kindergarten eager to learn to read and write. Some have previous preschool experience but not many.
My students need 6 soft seats, 2 beanbag chairs, and a reading pillow to create a comfy place to practice their new reading skills. Since Kindergarten no longer provides students with the creative play and socialization time as in the past, I really want to make my classroom library a comfy and comfortable place where students want to spend their time. As we learn new letter sounds and reading skills, these students need time to practice so that they can build their fluency Having a colorful library with special seats will draw the children's attention and be inviting.
What was the last book you read?
How long did it take you to read it? You were able to read that book, comprehend it, and enjoy it because you went to kindergarten. I want to give my students the gift of learning to read so that they can later read to learn, read to travel to many places, and read to have enriching experiences through literature. It all starts here, in kindergarten, in our library, on our comfy colorful new chairs that YOU the donors will provide. Thank you!
