Our school is a Title I school and is populated primarily by students with a low socio-economic status. Of all of the other elementary schools in the district, our school has the largest Special Education population with 7 classrooms/teachers, over 20 paraprofessionals, and almost 100 Special Education students. Their needs range from resource to severe and profound.
In our classroom specifically, we have a room full of wonderful and energetic students that live with either Autism, Down Syndrome, Mild Intellectual Disability, or some other Developmental Delay.
With that, it is so important for my students to learn in a way that truly fits them. As I mentioned, they are all very energetic. We utilize many brain breaks, sensory breaks, and game-based learning periods throughout our day. Each of the friends in our room is truly unique and special and we are so lucky as teachers and aides to spend our time with them!
My students spend a large portion of their day doing SmartBoard activities, working in groups on the floor, and completing activities that require they be on the ground. Our classroom is covered in hard tile and is quite uncomfortable for all of the activities we complete on the floor.
A comfortable new carpet would enhance my students' ability to feel at home in our classroom and to complete their given activities in a flexible seating environment.
I chose a new carpet as my DonorsChoose.org project in order to help my students feel comfortable and "warm" in our classroom environment.
