Comfy Behinds for Collaborative Minds

Help me give my students a few new collaborative seating choices, including yoga ball chairs!

My Students

My students this year are such a great bunch! They all have varying backgrounds, as well as varying depth of knowledge is certain areas. As a title I school, most kids are low income. Some come from single parent families, with 1 or more siblings in school. My kids are fun, motivated, creative, and so kind. But most of all, they are deserving. All of my kids learn in a variety of ways and flexible seating is a way to reach all of my kids. Our classroom currently has these "old school" desks with the built in arms. The tops are slanted and EVERYTHING falls off of them! Our pencils roll off, our scissors and glue slide off, papers and notebooks constantly hit the ground. It is a struggle during note taking time! Most importantly, our desks are in rows and does not allow for collaboration. Math is a subject of inquiry, discussion, and collaboration and I currently cannot provide this in an efficient way.

With new seating and getting rid of the old desks, students will be able to collaborate, work better, and more efficiently complete work, all while being super engaged.

My Project

The materials selected, such as yoga chairs, a standing desk, stools, and tables will benefit my kids this year and to follow by allowing collaboration, flexibility, and meeting the needs of those ADHD kiddos that just NEED to move! We implement some flex seating now but really need new desks to allow me to help them collaborate with each other and do team work assignments without worrying about how to group the desks that do not group together well! Having tables and desks that move easily will allow my students to engage in mathematical and critical thinking discourse! Not only will they be learning math comfortably, they will be discussing math like the mathematicians they are!
